Over 300 students of a residential school in Rayagada walked 5kms to meet the district Collector and convey their long-list of grievances against school management which includes shortage of teachers. On Tuesday, the students of Ekalavya Residential School, managed by Odisha Tribal Development department, staged dharna outside the Collector’s office while waiting to apprise him of their problems.
The students alleged that the quality of food served in the hostel was not good and there were no proper toilet arrangements. This apart, they also complained of unavailability of sufficient teachers in the school. The students said despite being apprised of the matter, none from the school administration initiated any steps to resolve the issues, which is why they were forced to walk on foot to meet the Collector and air their grievances.
"We are now in Class 10 and till now we don’t have an English teacher. We have complained about the same several times but it has not been solved. No new teacher has been appointed. How are we supposed to give the exams when our course/syllabus is still incomplete? The Term 1 examinations are approaching and the syllabus for class 10 is incomplete. How will we attend the exams? Our English classes should be conducted or else how will we appear for the Term 1 examinations," said Chandini Kutruka, a student.
"The students of Ekalavya Residential School who had come here were facing several issues related to administration. They have directly informed me about their problems and I have given them a timeline to solve their problems. They students returned to their campus after they were given an assurance. We are trying to solve their issues within the timeline for which we are necessitating all possible steps. From today, we are making all possible arrangements to find a solution to whatever issue they have been facing," assured Collector Saroj Kumar Mishra.
