What Is Bluesky And Why Are X Users Migrating There?
Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) is facing a mass exodus, with nearly a million users migrating to the rival platform Bluesky following the US presidential elections. Prominent figures such as journalists, actors, and musicians are leading the shift, causing Bluesky to top app download charts on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Bluesky now boasts 19 million users, up from 10 million in early September.
The migration is driven by several factors, including Musk's strong support for Donald Trump's presidential campaign and his formation of a super PAC. This, along with Trump's announcement that Musk would be part of his cabinet, has led many to fear that X could become a right-wing echo chamber. Additionally, recent changes to X's terms of service, which allow the platform to use users' posts and media to train AI models, have spurred privacy concerns.
Bluesky, initially launched in 2019 by former X CEO Jack Dorsey, offers users more control over their feeds by allowing them to choose the algorithms that influence content. The platform also promotes authenticity by enabling users to have website addresses as handles, providing a more genuine social media experience compared to X’s bot-heavy environment.
