In a remarkable breakthrough for cancer treatment, a 15-year-old girl battling blood cancer has been able to bounce back with successful recuperation, all thanks to CAR-T cell therapy. Trupti, a girl from Mayurbhanj, Odisha who was suffering from acute leukemia, is the first patient in eastern India to receive the CAR-T cell therapy.

This cutting-edge treatment, successfully administered by a skilled team of doctors at Bhubaneswar, marks a significant milestone in medical services as it is the first successful CAR-T cell therapy in Odisha and the fifth in India. So, what is CAR-T Cell therapy or the Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cells Therapy? Penn Medicine situated in Philadelphia discovered the first CAR-T cell medications. Science magazine recognized its impact by naming it the “Breakthrough of the Year” in 2013. This therapy is rampant in the West, but in India it is still in its baby steps.

Currently, CAR-T therapy is FDA-approved to treat several types of blood cancers, including Leukemia, Lymphoma and Multiple myeloma. How Does CAR-T Cell Therapy Work? Now, CAR-T Cell Therapy comes to the rescue when other treatments prove futile. Often, it helps people live longer. T cells are white blood cells. Each T cell has a receptor that can recognize antigens, these antigens are the proteins or molecules which are the cause of the disease.

CAR-T cells are cells that are genetically engineered in a laboratory. They have a new receptor so they can bind to cancer cells and kill them. Different types of cancers have different antigens. Each kind of CAR-T cell therapy is made to fight a specific kind of cancer antigen. So a CAR-T cell therapy made for one type of cancer won't work against another type of cancer.
