Four Sisters From Nagaland Magically Weave Folk Music With Bollywood Hits

You might have witnessed many popular folk music that have been used in Bollywood films! But, how many Bollywood songs you remember have been recreated with a folk flair? Well, then meet these 4 sisters - Nagaland’s young cultural exports.

The four sisters— Alüne (Lulu), Kuvelü (Kuku), Mütsevelü (Mercy) and Azi Tetseo (Azi) —are popularly known as the Tetseo Sisters. These musicians generally use their traditional instruments- Naga one-stringed instrument, the Tati/Heka Libuh.

Last year, the Tetseo Sisters picked the 'Barso Re' song from the Hindi Movie 'Guru'. Written by A. R. Rahman and originally sung by Shreya Ghoshal, the 'Barso Re' song was given new folk touch by the Tetseo Sisters. Their cover of popular Bollywood film song 'Dil Diya Gallan' was released on Youtube and it went viral.

These 4 sisters are redefining folk music with their distinctively fresh, spirited sound. Their musical journey started when they put together a song for a cultural festival at school. These four sisters formed their own band in 1994 and travelled the country to spread the music of their ancestors.

They have gained popularity via regular appearances at Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival and have become one of the State’s most popular cultural ambassadors.
