GOLDEN Moment
Six medals in just 24 hours. That’s how impressive India have been at this year’s Paralympics. In a historic feat, shooter Avani Lekhara on Monday (August 30) became the first ever woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics.
The 19-year-old fired her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women's 10 metre Air Rifle Standing SH1 event at Tokyo.
Avani, who had sustained a critical spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2012, finished with a world record equalling a total of 249.6, thus in turn creating a Paralympics record. Two-time Paralympics gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia secured silver in Men’s Javelin throw F46 event, while Sundar Singh Gurjar bagged bronze medal in the same event.
Yogesh Kathuniya has secured a bronze in Men's discus throw F56 event with his best throw of 44.38m. Celebrations began on Sunday on the National Sports Day in India when India clinched three medals in Tokyo.
Para-paddler Bhavina Patel secured a silver for Table Tennis in Women’s Singles Class 4 final while Nishad Kumar bagged a silver for high jump in High Jump T 47 event. Vinod Kumar won a bronze in Men's discus throw final in F52 category but it was later put on hold following protests regarding his disability classification.
Tokyo Paralympics Technical Delegates decided Vinod Kumar is not eligible for Discus F52 class. His result in the competition is void, which means he loses the bronze medal.
