The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday (July 6) rejected all petitions seeking permission to hold Rath Yatra in other Jagannath temples of Odisha except the Puri Srimandir. The Apex Court held that Odisha Government has taken a considered decision keeping in mind the current second wave of the Covid-19. Today, the bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, which also comprised Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hrishikesh Roy was hearing a writ petition filed by Odisha Vikas Parishad challenging the state government’s decision. The Odisha government had banned Rath Yatra celebrations across Odisha except in the Puri Srimandir as part of Covid-19 pandemic control measures. The State authorities have however allowed the conduct of the rituals inside the temples with adherence to Covid guidelines. Prior to the Supreme Court hearing, the Orissa High Court had also rejected petitions seeking public observance of the annual car festival in Kendrapara, Nilagiri and Bhatli this year. This year, if Rath Yatra is permitted, devotees could suffer, said CJI Justice Ramana hoping that God allows conduct of all rituals next year. He has also said that he wishes to come to Puri for the Rath Yatra. However, in view of the public health situation in the country, he said that he has decided to worship Lord Jagannath at home. Meanwhile, petitioner advocate Jitendra Mohapatra has accused the Odisha government of misleading people regarding the earlier decision of the Supreme Court on conduct of the Rath Yatra rituals in the state.
