Terror engulfed the town of Rajgangpur after wild elephants entered the outskirts of the town. A herd of over 8 elephants entered the town of Rajgangpur on Tuesday (August 17). The Rajgangpur forest department kept a watch on the elephants to avoid any damage in the region.
However, man-elephant conflict is a common affair in Odisha today. Due to this conflict causalities from both sides occur. As per Government reports, as many as 862 elephants and 921 human deaths have been reported during the period of 2010 to August 2021 in Odisha.
While the state was once home to 2,044 elephants in 1979, the numbers have come down drastically. According to the Elephant Census 2017, there are 1976 elephants including 344 male elephants, 1092 female and 502 elephant calves in Odisha. In the year 2002 Keonjhar district was home to 112 elephants.
However, due to large-scale of mining activities only 40 elephants are remaining in the district at this date. Meanwhile, Dhenkanal District which is home to 169 elephants are reportedly get trapped in the crisscrossing of Rengali irrigation canals.
Similarly, around 70 elephants of Chandaka sanctuary have reportedly abandoned the sanctuary and migrated to Ganjam, Nayagarh, and Cuttack districts. During last 10 years at least 25 elephants were killed by trains while 115 were killed due to electrocution in Odisha.
As far as legal enforcement is concerned, Odisha has an extremely poor track record. Reports suggest that not a single poacher or ivory trader has been convicted in Odisha in the last 20 years.
According to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, killing of an elephant which is protected under Schedule I could land a person in a seven-year imprisonment term. However, a lack of prosecution has increased the crime against elephants in the state.
