In a shocking yet rare incident, an elderly man jumped into his wife's funeral pyre and killed himself at Sialjodi village under Golamunda block in Kalahandi district on Wednesday (Aug 25).
The deceased has been identified as Nilamani Sabar. Sources said that Nilamani's wife Raibari had passed away due to a cardiac arrest after which Nilamani and his four sons had conducted her funeral at the village's funeral ground.
After lighting the pyre, the family members and other accompanying villagers had gone to take a bath. However, while everyone was returning post rituals, a distressed and mentally agonized Nilamani ran back to his wife's pyre and jumped into it.
Since the blaze was very strong, Nilamani could not be saved and was charred to death. It is pertinent to mention that Nilamani was also a Panchayat Samiti member. Meanwhile, villagers expressed their shock and disbelief over the incident.
After receiving information, the Kegaon police reached the spot and confirmed the incident.
