The Supreme Court on Thursday (June 3) asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) to finalize the assessment criteria for Class 12 board exams in two weeks. A bench of Justices asked Attorney General K K Venugopal who appeared for the CBSE and advocate J K Das who appeared for the CISCE, to place on record the parameters within two weeks.
CBSE counsel said that it will require some time to formulate the well-defined objective criteria for assessment of class 12 students. On the other hand, advocate J K Das who appeared for the CISCE, said that the board wanted 3-4 weeks' time for placing the objective criteria. But, the bench clarified that it will not give more time for placement of objective criteria citing that many students will be taking admissions in colleges in India and abroad.
The Supreme Court will hear this matter after two weeks. During the hearing, the top court welcomed the government's decision to cancel the CBSE and ISCE Class 12 board exams due to the pandemic. Earlier on June 1, the central government cancelled CBSE and ISCE Class 12 board examinations for 2021 in the wake of the Covid-19 infection. This decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Though, the decision of cancelling the examination came as a relief for all stakeholders including parents, teachers and students, the challenge now is for the CBSE to arrive at alternative criteria to decide grade 12 marks.
