Locals around State Bank of India (SBI) Balianta branch on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar displayed alertness after nabbing a robber who allegedly looted and attempted to decamp with cash and gold ornaments on Tuesday (Aug 31).
Meanwhile, a CCTV camera installed in the area had also captured the ambush. The accused has been identified as Shankar Parida from Balianta region. As per sources, Parida had been sitting at the bank premises for several hours.
When the bank employees started shutting the premises down, the accused allegedly brandished a toy gun. Parida threatened the employees and attacked two of the four employees at the bank. Thereafter, he attempted to decamp with Rs 8.32 Lakh cash and gold ornaments.
However, alert locals of the area chased him down and nabbed him in a nearby field and recovered the cash and gold ornaments from him. Later he was handed over to the police. Earlier, an ATM loot bid was foiled in Bhubaneswar's Old Town area.
On August 25, the police had caught hold of the thieves while they were trying to loot money from an SBI ATM located at Badhei Banka square in Old Town under Lingaraj Police limits.
