Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's claim on 'new variant of coronavirus' in Singapore which could reach India sparked off a diplomatic row. On Tuesday (May 18), Kejriwal tweeted that a 'very dangerous' strain of the Coronavirus was prevalent in Singapore and it could affect children the most. He had asked the central government to immediately halt air services to Singapore and prioritise vaccination drive for children. Responding to Kejriwal’s tweet, Singapore's diplomatic mission said that there is no Singapore variant. Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also slammed Kejriwal, saying, "Politicians should stick to facts! There is no “Singapore variant”. As per reports, the Singaporean government also conveyed its strong objection to Indian High Commissioner on Delhi Chief Minister's tweet. After the fallout, the Central government lashed out at Arvind Kejriwal for his irresponsible allegations against Singapore. Getting into damage control, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar appreciated Singapore’s role as a logistics hub and oxygen supplier and said, Singapore and India have been solid partners in the fight against Covid-19. He further censured Kejriwal saying that the Delhi Chief Mininster's remarks were "irresponsible" and that the Delhi CM did not speak for India. Meanwhile, the spokesperson for India's external affairs ministry Arindam Bagchi said that the High Commissioner clarified that Delhi Chief Mininster has no competence to pronounce on Covid variants or civil aviation policy.
