With Omicron starting to engulf India, the third wave of coronavirus could hit the peak by February with daily cases in the country expected to reach up to 1-1.5 lakh. This information was recently shared by IIT scientist Manindra Agarwal, who is involved in the mathematical projection of trajectory of COVID-19.
According to the expert, in their latest forecast where the new Omicron variant has been factored in, it was asserted that the third wave is likely to be milder than the second wave. Speaking to news agency PTI, Manindra informed that so far the severity of Omicron is not like the one seen in the Delta variant and a close eye is being kept on cases in South Africa where many infections of this variant have been recorded.
He also said that as of now South Africa has not seen a rise in hospitalization. He said “although the new variant has shown high transmissibility, its severity is not like the one seen in the Delta variant”. However, a fresh set of data on the virus and hospitalisations would help in getting a more solid picture, he asserted.
As observed during the spread of delta, a mild lockdown (night curfew, restrictions on crowding) can bring down beta substantially which will significantly reduce the peak value, Manindra added. India has so far reported 23 cases of the Omicron variant while genome sequencing report is awaited for hundreds of positive samples.
The rising cases of daily Covid-19 infections across the country is said to be majorly driven by the JN.1 sub variant. As of now, the country has reportedly detected about 145 cases of JN.1 variant from eight states.
If one draws parallels between the patterns, is there any relation between the surge of Covid-19 infections and the month December? Several studies have pointed out that the cold and dry condition provides a habitat to the Covid-19 virus.
The Health Ministry on Monday issued an advisory in the wake of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in some States/UTs and detection of the first case of the new JN.1 variant. Highlighting the need for maintaining constant vigil over the COVID situation in the country, Union Health Secretary, Sudhansh Pant shot off a letter to States/UTs.
The fears of the Covid-19 pandemic have resurfaced across the country after several people in Kerala have been infected by the new JN.1 variant. India reported 335 fresh COVID19 cases and five deaths in the last 24 hours.
