Amid reports of new COVID variant, the Union Health Ministry on Thursday (Nov 23) issued an advisory for all states and union territories. The ministry has advised rigorous screening and testing of international travelers coming or transiting through Botswana, South Africa and Hong Kong, where several cases of a new variant of Covid-19 were reported.
The new variant called the ‘B.1.1.529’ is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations.
Speaking on the same, the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) Chief, Rama Raman Mohanty informed that restrictions will be imposed in Odisha as per the advisory.
India has recorded 1,134 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases increased to 7,026, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
"I'm confident that this year we will be able to say that Covid-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a media briefing.
Wray's comments come after the US Department of Energy had recently assessed that the Covid-19 pandemic was likely caused by an accidental lab leak in China.
Covid-19 was the sixth leading cause of death in the US in January, according to a report published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
