With people losing their jobs during the pandemic, each sector is fighting its own battle. The local theatre, popularly known as the Jatra is one of the worst affected industries. This theatre form has been around for a very long time and is an integral part of the Odia heritage. Despite being an indispensable part of the State’s culture, the Jatra artistes are struggling to make ends meet.
These Jatra artistes who have made us laugh, cry and sway in emotion are currently facing a crisis. With COVID 19 restrictions preventing stage shows, they are without work and have been forced to set up food stalls in Bhubaneswar to take care of their families. They said that they are waiting for the government to provide them assistance and financial support.
