In a dramatic turn of events, technology became a lifesaver when a 26-year-old Mumbai techie, Kshitij Zodape, narrowly escaped a fatal scuba diving accident near Puducherry, all thanks to his Apple smart watch.
A Dive Gone Wrong
An avid diver since 2020, Kshitij was exploring the Bay of Bengal, about 36 metres underwater, when his weight belt suddenly came loose, causing him to shoot upward uncontrollably. The waters were rough, visibility poor, and the situation turned life-threatening in seconds.
As his ascent began, the Apple Watch Ultra on his wrist detected the rapid vertical movement and immediately flashed warnings, urging him to slow down. A fast rise to the surface can cause lung expansion injuries one of diving’s deadliest risks.

Tech to the Rescue
When Kshitij couldn’t control his rise, the watch automatically triggered its emergency siren a high-pitched alarm audible up to 180 metres away. The distinct sound caught the attention of his diving instructor, who rushed to his aid just in time, preventing a potential tragedy.
“I didn’t even know my watch had this feature,” Kshitij admitted. Later, he shared his story with Apple CEO Tim Cook, who personally replied, “I’m so glad your instructor heard the alarm and quickly assisted you.”
A Timely Reminder
Launched in 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra was designed for adventurers, but for Kshitij, it became a guardian underwater. His story is a powerful reminder of how smart tech, awareness, and quick action can make the difference between danger and survival.
