‘Ordered Samsung Galaxy Z Fold on Amazon, but received...’ Bengaluru engineer stunned!

What was meant to be a joyful unboxing turned into a nightmare for Premanand, a Bengaluru-based software engineer, who lost Rs 1.86 lakh in an alleged Amazon delivery scam. The Yelachenahalli resident had ordered a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphone on October 14, paying the full amount using his HDFC credit card.

When the parcel arrived on October 19 at 4:16 pm, Premanand, cautious about online frauds, decided to record the unboxing. To his horror, the sealed box contained not a smartphone but a plain white tile neatly packed inside.

Complaint and Investigation

Acting swiftly, Premanand filed a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal before approaching the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station. The police have registered an FIR under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, which deals with cheating by personation using computer resources. An investigation is underway to trace the culprits behind the fraudulent delivery.

Another Alarming Case in Mumbai

In a similar cyber fraud, a 71-year-old woman from Wadala, Mumbai, lost Rs 18.5 lakh while attempting to order a litre of milk online. The scammer, posing as a delivery executive, sent her a fraudulent link and stayed on call as she entered her personal details, giving him full access to her phone.

Authorities have since warned citizens to be extremely careful when shopping online or sharing personal and financial information digitally.
