The Bride Checklist That Raised Eyebrows

In a post on X, Singh recounted overhearing a conversation between a relationship manager and a South Delhi mother whose son earns Rs 73 lakh annually at a reputed company. While describing her son as a “good profile,” the mother outlined her expectations for a future daughter-in-law: tall, fair, homely, soft-spoken, caring and from a respectable family.

However, what followed surprised Singh. The mother reportedly stated she did not want her son’s wife to work after marriage. When asked whether her son was employed, she clarified that it was fine for him to work just not his wife. Yet she insisted the girl be well-educated, from a reputed college and smart.

Singh summarised the contradiction sharply, saying it felt like seeking “a well-qualified maid with a degree.”

Internet Reacts Strongly

The post quickly gained traction, with users criticising what they described as outdated and controlling expectations masked as tradition. Comments ranged from sarcastic remarks about “IIT degree, housewife designation” to observations like “Modern education, vintage expectations.” Others called it a hunt for a “trophy wife.”

Divided Opinions

Not everyone agreed with Singh’s perspective, with some arguing the issue could be viewed differently.

As the debate continues, the episode has spotlighted the clash between progressive education and regressive expectations in modern Indian marriages.
