When life calls for a move- whether to a new city or across the globe- some things simply can’t fit in a suitcase. It’s rarely the furniture or décor that weighs on the heart; it’s the soft paw prints and wagging tails left behind. For many, saying goodbye to a beloved pet is a sorrow too deep to measure.

Techie Couple’s Love For Their Pet Dog- Sky

For Divya and John Rajesh from Hyderabad, Sky wasn’t just a golden retriever. He was joy in their quiet apartment, laughter after long workdays, and comfort on weary evenings. Their home revolved around him, and the thought of leaving him behind when a career opportunity took them to Melbourne was unbearable.

A Price Too High for Some, But Not for Love

Reportedly, software professionals who lived frugally to save for their dream home, the couple now faced an even greater cost- ₹15 lakh to reunite with Sky. Australia’s strict rules meant dogs from India must spend 180 days in a rabies-free country undergoing tests, vaccines, and quarantine.

"We are not born with a silver spoon. We had to save every penny to bring him here," says John.

"We were also dissuaded by friends and family who said that you can easily get another pet for Rs 2 to 3k. But what they did not understand was that Sky was not our pet; he was like a child to us," he added.

Months of Waiting and Worry

Choosing Dubai for Sky’s quarantine, Divya and John relied on daily video calls to stay connected.

"We chose Dubai as the quarantine country because we felt that Sky was a Hindi guy, and he would understand the language and not feel that the place was totally alien," says Divya.

"We lived on daily updates about him and counted each day. Did Sky eat well today? Is he okay? Does he miss us? We stayed connected on video calls," revealed Divya.

A Reunion Worth Every Rupee

After six long months in Dubai and another 10 days in Australian quarantine, Sky finally arrived in Melbourne. "While we knew that Sky would reunite with us, Sky did not know it, and so the moment he saw us, the look in his eyes was something we will never forget," says John.

Now, he runs freely on green lawns, chasing frisbees under open skies- a symbol of devotion that no distance or cost could break.
