A routine check of the monthly electricity bill turned into a moment of disbelief for a Bengaluru resident after spotting a staggering charge of Rs 16,883 for their 3BHK apartment. The unexpected spike has now sparked debate online, with many questioning whether such a bill is justified.
Taking to Reddit, the resident shared a screenshot from the BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited) app showing the amount due before February 18. “Is this high of a bill normal in Bengaluru?” the user asked, clearly puzzled by the figure.
The resident detailed their household’s electricity consumption to provide context. The apartment houses four people and runs one air conditioner for about 5–7 hours daily. Other appliances include a 650W gaming PC, a small induction cooktop, an air fryer, and four fans that operate throughout the day.

Despite this usage, the user said their bills typically range between Rs 5,000 and Rs 9,000. “I just don’t think it should be anywhere near this high,” the post read, ending with a direct question: “What can I do here to report this?”
Social Media Reacts
The post quickly drew responses. One user remarked, “And here I thought my family of 4 was irresponsible with a 2k bill.” Another stated, “Absolutely not normal. But do keep an eye on your flatmates' usage.” A third suggested the bill should not exceed Rs 4,000, while another bluntly asked, “Are you paying for the entire building?”
The unusually high bill has left many online wondering whether it’s a billing error or something more.
