The National Green Tribunal [NGT] slammed the District administration of Balasore over illegal sand mining in Subranarekha riverbed.

As an interim measure, the NGT directed one Rajesh Khatua from Jaleswar, Balasore to deposit Rs 1 crore towards environmental compensation to Odisha Pollution Control Board (PCB) within a period of one month till final computation of environmental compensation is carried out by SEIAA, Odisha.

Satellite technology and GIS mapping should be used to study the flood patterns. Mitigation for flood damage would be more appropriate to manage floods rather than attempts to stop the river from flooding into the historical flood plains which nature has developed over centuries. 

With 16 sluice gates of Galudih barrage in Jharkhand having been opened, the impact of floodwater has started visible from today morning itself. 

Following heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the Subarnarekha river in the neighboring state, the Jharkhand government had to open the Galudih barrage releasing flood water into Odisha.

Though there are no threats of any major flood, but it is anticipated that the floodwater might enter some low-lying villages in Bhograi and Baliapal in Balasore districts.

Incessant rain under the impact of cyclone Yaas has triggered flood-like situation in Subarnarekha river which is flowing above the danger mark at Jamosala ghat in Balasore district. 

The Chief Engineer of Odisha Water Resources Department (WRD) Jyotirmaya Rath dismissed reports raising fears of flood in Subarnarekha river following cyclone Yaas that battered Balasore and Bhadrak districts today.
