The Shankaracharya of Puri Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalanand Saraswati stoked a controversy yesterday (Nov 1) when he claimed Jesus Christ was originally a Hindu and that he stayed in India for 10 years.

As per Shankaracharya's claims, there is no documentation about 10 years of Jesus’ life in the Bible. The fact is, Jesus was in India during that time and out of that, he stayed at Puri for three years during which he came in contact with the then Shankaracharya.

“We do not use the word ‘Puri’ after Ayodhya, Mathura, Ujjain, Haridwar, Kashi, Kanchi and Dwarka though these are also the seven ‘Puris’. Jagannath Puri is the eighth ‘Puri’. Moreover, ‘Puri’ signifies only ‘Jagannath Puri’,” said the Shankaracharya.

The historic visit will also see him inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of reconstruction projects worth over Rs 400 crore at the Himalayan temple.
