Counting of votes for the by-election to Dhamnagar Assembly constituency is under process. The counting will take place on 14 tables in as many as 18 rounds.

The BJP’s candidate Suryavanshi Suraj polled 80351 votes followed by BJD’s choice Abanti Das 70470. From the very first round of the counting, Suraj continued to lead.  

The fate of the candidates sealed in the EVM machines will be revealed tomorrow as the counting is all set to start from 8 am on Sunday.

Some women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have alleged that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is distributing money to only its supporters in the SHGs and not to all.

A BJP delegation led by party spokesperson, Lenin Mohanty visited the Commission and urged the Chief Electoral Officer, Sushil Lohani, to increase the surveillance to refrain the BJP from using force in the bypoll.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on November 3.

State Chief Electoral Officer Sushil Lohani asked to upload photos or videos of any such incident violating the ‘Model Code of Conduct’ on the C-Vigil mobile app. The CEO also assured that action will be taken within 100 minutes of receiving the complaint.

The complaints were registered at Dhamnagar Police Station under several sections after allegation about cash distribution to lure voters was received, informed the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Sushil Lohani on Wednesday.

"We demand the CEO to take action against those who breached the poll code of conduct under Section 171 B, 171 C of Indian Penal Code", said Samir Mohanty

Is Jajpur calling the shots in Dhamnagar? The question surfaced in a recent BJD meeting in Bhadrak where a party member expressed his dissatisfaction over excess meddling of party leaders from Jajpur in the by-election.

While streets, lanes and by-lanes in poll-bound Dhamnagar are dotted with banners and posters of the candidates; bike rallies, meetings and road shows are being organised on a regular basis. 

Party president Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday expelled Das from the party on the ground of anti-party activities. The party informed this by releasing an order.
