Hardik Pandya
Former India batter Robin Uthappa believes Hardik Pandya could still make a return to Test cricket, calling it an exciting possibility if the all-rounder regains full fitness and chooses to play the longest format. According to Uthappa, Pandya reclaiming the No. 7 position in the Test side would significantly strengthen India’s balance.
Pandya last featured in a Test match in 2018 and has stayed away from red-ball cricket since then due to persistent back issues. In his absence, India have explored other pace-bowling all-round options, with players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur emerging as alternatives.
Uthappa feels that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not stand in Pandya’s way if he is physically ready and motivated to return. He pointed out that modern all-rounders are no longer expected to bowl long spells, suggesting Pandya could comfortably manage 12–15 overs per innings given his current fitness and form.

“If Hardik wants to play Test cricket and contribute to India’s World Test Championship campaign, I don’t see the BCCI stopping him,” Uthappa said on his YouTube channel. He added that the decision ultimately rests with Pandya himself, as selectors are mainly looking for assurance on his fitness.
Pandya has so far represented India in 11 Tests, scoring 532 runs at an average of 31.29, including one century and four half-centuries, while also picking up 17 wickets at an average of 31.05.
Uthappa further noted that Pandya has already achieved major success in white-ball cricket, having won multiple ICC titles, including the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. A World Test Championship triumph, he said, would complete a rare “grand slam” of achievements for the all-rounder.
In addition, Uthappa shared his concerns about India’s current Test bowling depth. While he identified Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj as clear standouts, he felt others are yet to consistently assert themselves. He praised Prasidh Krishna’s effort and work ethic but suggested the fast bowler still needs to improve his overall effectiveness in Test cricket, despite showing promise in phases.
