The 2025 IPL season was nothing short of a nightmare for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The five-time champions, known for their consistency and composure, shockingly finished at the bottom of the table, a first in their storied history. From flawed team combinations to persisting with out-of-form players, the season exposed cracks in the famed CSK strategy.

While reports suggested that the franchise might release five players, CSK cheekily dismissed the rumours on social media. Still, with the retention deadline set for November 15 and the mini-auction in December, tough decisions seem inevitable.

Rahul Tripathi — The Missed Opportunity

Signed for Rs 3.4 crore, Rahul Tripathi failed to justify his price tag. The aggressive top-order batter managed just 55 runs in five matches at an average of 11. His early exits and inability to anchor innings proved costly for the team. With younger, hungrier batters available, CSK might part ways with Tripathi to free up funds for a stronger top-order option.

Deepak Hooda — Experience Without Impact

Veteran all-rounder Deepak Hooda was roped in for Rs 1.7 crore, but his numbers told a grim story just 31 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 75.61. Despite his experience, Hooda couldn’t adapt to his lower-order role, and CSK might look for a more dynamic finisher in his place.

Vijay Shankar — The Underwhelming Finisher

Tamil Nadu all-rounder Vijay Shankar returned to CSK after a decade but failed to make a mark. In six games, he scored 118 runs with a lone fifty and no contribution with the ball. With limited utility and inconsistent form, Shankar’s spot looks uncertain as CSK gears up for a major overhaul ahead of IPL 2026.

It will be pertinent to see what approach CSK comes up with in the auction, which is likely to be held on December 15.
