Cuttack: The 24th All Odisha Billiards and Snooker Championship organised by Cuttack Club concluded on Sunday. In the last event of the championship, experienced Nishant Biswal defeated young Mohammad Raza by 6-2 frames to become the senior snooker state ranking champion.

A comprehensive performance in the final ensured the second state title for Nishant Biswal who started off with a bang by winning the first three frames. Although Mohmmad Raza came back to win the next two, Nishant didn’t give a single chance and won three back-to-back frames by 52-45, 82-63 and 48-45.

Speaking to odishatv.in, Nishant Biswal said, “It was a very tough journey for me. I had to meet Siddharth Sen and Ashutosh Padhy in quarter-final and semi-final. It was a competitive final today and I am delighted to maintain the lead and win the game.”

Earlier in the tournament, Subrat Das defeated Kunal Agarwal in the senior billiards category whereas Rahul Naik managed to beat Avinash Mohapatra in junior snooker.

“We practiced really hard for a month before this championship. I was unable to play snooker because I was busy as an organiser. I want to congratulate Nishant for bagging the trophy in snooker,” said state billiards champion Subrat Das.

“Organising a tournament is always difficult as we don’t have volunteers and our players help us in the entire coordination and organisation. Improvement of the game in the state depends on the development of infrastructure and other facilities for the players,” said tournament coordinator Govind Sharma.

All the winners and runners-up qualified to represent Odisha in the national championship and were awarded in a ceremony after the final event. The nationals will be held in December and January in Bengaluru.
