India head coach Gautam Gambhir
Just a day after India lifted the 2026 T20 World Cup trophy, head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly dismissed speculation about unrest inside the Indian dressing room, calling such reports completely baseless.
With the latest triumph, Gambhir has achieved a rare milestone as a coach, guiding India to two ICC titles in a short span - the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and now the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Despite these successes, his tenure since taking charge after the 2024 T20 World Cup has also seen criticism due to several bilateral series defeats.
During this period, India suffered Test series losses against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. The team also lost ODI series to Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand, which led to questions about the team environment and leadership approach.
Responding to the rumours, Gambhir made it clear that he would have no reason to continue if the players were unhappy with him.
He explained that his approach is straightforward- if the majority of players in the dressing room are not comfortable with the coach, there is no point in continuing. But if most players are satisfied, it means the job is being done correctly.
Gambhir also stressed that the atmosphere within the Indian team cannot remain hidden because of the constant public attention surrounding the side. According to him, anyone closely observing the team’s travel schedules, practice sessions and player interactions would understand the true environment.
In a blunt response to claims of tension within the squad, Gambhir said the narrative about a poor dressing-room atmosphere is “completely rubbish.” He added that neither he nor the team captain needs to repeatedly clarify the situation, as the team’s behaviour and unity are visible to everyone.

The head coach further spoke about the philosophy behind team selection. He said players are chosen based on trust and belief rather than temporary expectations. If a player is picked because the management trusts him, that faith should not disappear after just a few matches.
Gambhir pointed out that every member of the 15-player squad is backed with confidence by the team management. According to him, whenever any player gets an opportunity during the tournament, the belief is that they will contribute to the team’s success.
