India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has struck an optimistic note amid a prolonged lean patch, insisting that his best is yet to come as the T20 World Cup 2026 draws closer. Despite mounting scrutiny over his returns in the shortest format, the flamboyant batter has made it clear that he is far from losing belief in himself.

With less than two months to go for the global showpiece, Suryakumar’s form has become a talking point in Indian cricket circles. The skipper ended the 2025 T20I season without a single century, an unusual statistic for a player once considered one of the most destructive batters in the format. Yet, the 33-year-old views this phase not as a crisis, but as part of his growth as a sportsperson.

Addressing an audience at a public event, Suryakumar described his current run as a “learning stage” in his career. He underlined the importance of teamwork, crediting his fellow players for standing by him during this tough period. Using a military metaphor, he referred to his teammates as “14 soldiers” who have shielded him while he works on rediscovering his touch.

The Indian captain also doubled down on his confidence, reiterating that his return to form would be emphatic rather than gradual. According to Suryakumar, those around him would instantly recognise the moment he hits peak rhythm again. Drawing parallels with academics, he explained that setbacks only motivate him to work harder, much like a student striving to improve after poor results.

Suryakumar’s comments follow his earlier assertion that he is “not out of form, but out of runs,” a statement that sparked debate among fans and experts alike. Statistically, the numbers have been stark. In 21 T20Is this year, he has accumulated just 218 runs at an average of 13.62, with a top score of 47 not out. His strike rate of 123.16, along with 18 fours and 10 sixes, further reflects a subdued season by his lofty standards.
