Sahibzada Farhan
Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan has defended his controversial celebration during the Super 4s clash against India in the Asia Cup 2025.
The right-hander marked his half-century with a ‘gun celebration’, raising his bat like a firearm and mimicking a shooting gesture. The act sparked widespread criticism, with many linking it to the tragic Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year that claimed over 25 lives.
After the match, Farhan clarified that his move was spontaneous. "It just came to me in the moment. I usually don’t celebrate fifties, but I felt like doing something different. It wasn’t about provoking anyone. We should always play fearless cricket, no matter the opponent," he explained.
India’s cricket board (BCCI) filed an official complaint with the ICC, leading to a hearing in Dubai on Friday (September 26). At the hearing, Farhan insisted his celebration was not politically motivated.
Citing examples, he pointed out that Indian legends MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have also performed animated celebrations on the field. He further added that, as a Pathan, such gestures are rooted in cultural traditions and are often used during moments of joy.
