Bhubaneswar: A young mountaineer from Odisha, Nrusingh Charan Sahu created history by climbing Mount Elbrus (5,642m), the highest peak in Europe on September 29, 2017.

Sahu, who had been accompanied by various mountaineers from India and abroad in the expedition that started on September 22 and ended on October 2, hoisted the Tricolour on Mt Elbrus at 11AM on September 29.

The quest to scale the peak started on September 28, 12 am from the base camp at 3,800m. Sahu and his fellow mountaineers had to struggle for 11 hours, at a temperature of minus 35 degree Celsius to achieve the feat, informed sources.

A resident of Nischitapur village of Khurda district, Sahu had earlier scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain peak in South Africa. He had also scaled Mount Stok Kangri (6,153m) in Leh on September 24, 2016.

The young mountaineer will be returning to Odisha on October 4, said sources.
