Manchester: Romelu Lukaku made a dream Premier League debut with his brace helping the 20-time champion Manchester United to a thumping 4-0 win against West Ham United in their 2017-18 season opener.

Lukaku, signed few weeks before by United manager Jose Mourinho for a British record transfer £75 million ($96 million, 82 million euros) from Merseyside club Everton did not disappoint the red devils who are yet to reclaim their glorious form after 2013, the last time they won the top flight under Sir Alex Fergusson.

The 24-year-old put United up front just 33 minutes into the first half by drilling a powerful strike from Marcus Rushford's pass at the Old Trafford. He doubled United's advantage with a towering header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick.

Substitute Anthony Martial added United's third slotting past West Ham's goalkeeper Joe Hart before Paul Pogba scored the fourth against the east London club in the 90th minute. The result sent Mourinho's men to the top of the standings table.
