Venkatesh Iyer
With the IPL 2026 mini-auction nearing, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has finally addressed the franchise’s much-debated decision to release all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer. The 26-year-old, who fetched a staggering Rs 23.75 crore during the 2025 mega-auction, is set to return to the auction list following an underwhelming season.
Despite a disappointing run last year, Iyer continues to be one of the most valued Indian all-rounders, entering the auction at a base price of Rs 2 crore. Only two Indian players are listed in that price bracket, placing him among the most in-demand names. The December 16 auction in Abu Dhabi features 1,355 players, including 45 in the INR 2 crore category, while only 77 slots are available across teams ensuring fierce competition for talents like Iyer.
The left-hander endured a tough IPL 2025, scoring just 142 runs from 11 matches and making little impact with the ball. His form slump played a major role in KKR’s decision to let him go despite investing heavily in him last year with the hope he would strengthen the side as a key Indian all-round option.

In a recent interaction, Venky Mysore opened up on the move, saying, “If he had scored 500 runs, nobody would’ve talked about the price tag. Maybe it did affect him. It was probably his toughest year for us since 2021. When you’re at the auction table, you think — should we retain and restrict ourselves, or release and keep flexibility with the purse? Last year was a learning experience, and considering the mini-auction dynamics, we chose to release him.”
Mysore also reiterated his stance on frequent auctions, expressing concern over how they disrupt team-building. “We told the IPL that you can't penalize franchises who scout talent, groom them and succeed, only to dismantle the team every three years. Retentions shouldn’t carry such a heavy price. You win a title and then have to break the squad apart. I'm not someone who finds mega auctions exciting.”
