India batter KL Rahul has revealed that thoughts of retirement have crossed his mind, though he believes the moment to step away from the game is still some distance off. Speaking candidly, Rahul stressed that when the time does arrive, he will not prolong his career unnecessarily, acknowledging that there is life beyond cricket.
Rahul shared his views while speaking to former England captain Kevin Pietersen on the latter’s YouTube channel. The 33-year-old said retirement would not be a difficult decision if he remains honest with himself. He added that his outlook has evolved with age and experience, making it easier to accept when it is time to move on.
Rahul emphasised that cricket will continue irrespective of individual careers, noting that family and personal life now play a much bigger role in shaping his priorities, especially after becoming a father.
The stylish right-hander also opened up about the mental strain caused by repeated injuries. While physical recovery is demanding, Rahul admitted that the mental battle during long injury layoffs has been far tougher, with moments when the mind questions whether to continue playing.

Still an Important Part of Team India
Despite not being named in India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Rahul remains a vital figure in Tests and ODIs. He recently underlined his value with an unbeaten century in the second ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot.
With over 4,000 Test runs, more than 3,000 ODI runs and a strong T20I record, KL Rahul’s contribution across formats remains significant. For now, the focus stays firmly on the present, even as he reflects maturely on the future.
