Former India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has called on the current team management to identify a long-term No. 3 batter—either Sai Sudharsan or Washington Sundar—and give that player a sustained run. His remarks follow India’s decision to drop Sudharsan for the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, where Sundar was promoted to the one-down spot. The move failed to deliver as India suffered a 30-run defeat.
Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, the No. 3 position has lacked continuity, with Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Karun Nair all tried in the role over the past year. The preference for all-round options led to Sundar—mostly used as a lower-order batter—being pushed up the order in Kolkata.

Rahane stressed that India need clarity and stability at the crucial No. 3 slot. “Let me take a name—Sai Sudharsan. He has done well, scoring 87 and 39. Batting at No. 3 demands a completely different skill set from batting at 6 or 7,” Rahane said. “Washy is a terrific talent, but No. 3 can be confusing for him. He might be unsure about how to structure his game. To me, Washy is a bowling all-rounder.”
He added that players need a defined role and consistent backing to flourish. “If he has to bat at No. 3, he must prepare differently and be given time. Lower-order batting needs a different mindset. Whether it’s Washy or Sai, giving them a sense of security is crucial.”
Sudharsan, who debuted earlier this year in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, had a modest start but impressed with a composed 87 in his last Test against the West Indies. Many expected him to feature against South Africa.
Rahane reiterated that commitment is vital.“If the management sees Sai as the long-term No. 3, he must get a long run—and the same applies to Washy. A player’s career is at stake. If India want stability, they must offer consistent opportunities.”
