India’s build-up to the ICC T20 World Cup has hit an unexpected pause after concerns emerged over Tilak Varma’s availability, following a medical procedure that could impact squad selection. What initially appeared to be a short-term setback has now opened a bigger question for the team management: What if Tilak is not cleared in time?

Reports quoting a BCCI official stated that Tilak Varma complained of acute pain in Rajkot while representing Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was diagnosed with testicular torsion and subsequently underwent a successful surgery. While the procedure went well, the uncertainty around recovery timelines has forced selectors to consider contingency plans.

The concern extends beyond the immediate series against New Zealand. Any delay in Tilak’s return could compel India to make a late change to their T20 World Cup squad, a scenario teams prefer to avoid at marquee events.

Why Tilak Matters

Tilak’s importance lies in his ability to stabilise India’s innings during the crucial middle overs (7–15). His value was on display in the Asia Cup 2025 final, where he struck a match-winning 69* against Pakistan, guiding India to the title.

Why Shreyas Iyer Fits the Bill

Among the names being discussed, Shreyas Iyer stands out as the most logical replacement. A natural No.3 or No.4, Iyer is well-versed in managing spin-heavy phases and keeping the innings moving, exactly the role Tilak performs.

Unlike specialist openers, Iyer’s inclusion would avoid reshuffling India’s batting order, allowing the team to retain its existing template.

Form, Fitness and Clarity

Iyer recently returned to form with 82 off 53 balls for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has received fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence, removing any doubts over availability.

Final Word

India doesn’t need a like-for-like left-hander as much as a middle-overs problem solver. If a late call is required, Shreyas Iyer appears the cleanest, most role-accurate option and possibly a timely course correction for the selectors.
