Pakistan star batter Babar Azam came under intense scrutiny following a disappointing debut for Sydney Sixers in the 2025–26 Big Bash League. Having been signed with much anticipation, all eyes were on Babar during the rain-curtailed 11-over opener against Perth Scorchers at Perth Stadium on Sunday, December 14.

Babar’s innings, however, failed to live up to expectations. He managed just two runs off five deliveries before being dismissed by fast bowler Brody Couch. The right-hander had an early let-off in the opening over when a mistimed shot dropped safely between the mid-on and mid-wicket fielders.

After taking four balls to open his account with a couple over the infield, Babar was dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the third over. Couch bowled a hard-length ball, and Babar’s attempted drive over mid-on resulted in a leading edge that spooned off the splice of the bat. Laurie Evans completed a comfortable catch.

Social Media Reaction and Official Post

At the time of his dismissal, Sydney Sixers were already struggling at 15 for 2 in 2.5 overs, having lost opener Daniel Hughes earlier. Following Babar’s departure, the Big Bash League’s official account posted a video of him playing a dot ball, captioned: “Babar Azam’s first ball in the Big Bash is a dot!”

The post sparked debate, with some fans calling it playful banter while others felt it was poorly timed.

Online Trolling Intensifies

Soon after, social media was flooded with critical comments, including phrases such as “Babar Azam hall of shame in BBL” and claims that he had “scammed” the Sydney Sixers.

Despite the tough start, Babar remains one of several Pakistani stars set to feature in the tournament. With players like Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf yet to make their appearances, the BBL still promises compelling subcontinental star power as the season unfolds.
