Indonesia’s Gede Priandana delivered a spell for the ages on Tuesday, etching his name into the record books during the opening T20 International against Cambodia in Bali. The right-arm pacer produced a sensational over in which he claimed five wickets, a feat never before achieved in international T20 cricket.

Priandana accomplished the historic moment in his very first over of the match, becoming the first cricketer across men’s and women’s T20Is to take five wickets in a single over since ball-by-ball records have been maintained. His devastating burst turned the game decisively in Indonesia’s favour, as Cambodia eventually fell 60 runs short of the target.

Set 168 to win, Cambodia were still in contention at 106 for 5 after 15 overs. However, the introduction of Priandana into the attack changed everything. In a stunning display of fast bowling, he dismantled the remaining batting lineup and ended the chase almost instantly.

The over began with a hat-trick, as Priandana dismissed Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Chanthoeun Rathanak off consecutive deliveries. After delivering a dot ball, he struck twice more, removing Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak to complete an extraordinary five-wicket over. Cambodia managed just a single run from the over- a wide  before being bowled out well short of the target.

Earlier in the match, Priandana had opened the batting for Indonesia but was dismissed for a modest 6 from 11 balls. The batting honours, however, belonged to wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma, who anchored the innings with an unbeaten 110 off 68 deliveries, smashing eight boundaries and six sixes to lift Indonesia to a formidable total.

Prior to Priandana’s achievement, taking five wickets in an over had occurred only twice in men’s domestic T20 cricket  by Al-Amin Hossain in Bangladesh’s Victory Day T20 Cup in 2013-14 and by Abhimanyu Mithun for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semi-final in 2019-20.

While four wickets in an over had been seen on 14 occasions in T20Is — most memorably Lasith Malinga’s four consecutive wickets against New Zealand in 2019. Priandana’s spell stands alone as the first-ever five-wicket over in international T20 cricket.
