Former India cricketer and selector Kris Srikkanth has raised eyebrows over Ayush Badoni’s inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the ongoing series against New Zealand, describing the decision as “completely unfair” and hinting at possible bias in the selection process.

Srikkanth criticised the rationale behind picking Badoni, pointing out that the young batter’s recent domestic performances, particularly in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, did not merit a spot in the national team. “With the way he has been playing, he had no chance of being selected,” Srikkanth said, questioning the consistency of the selection policy.

The former selector also highlighted the lack of clarity in the selection criteria. “For some players, runs must be scored to earn a spot. For others, they are picked despite poor form. This sends the wrong message to domestic cricketers waiting for their opportunity,” he explained.

Srikkanth expressed doubts about Badoni’s ability to influence matches at the international level, especially in the middle order. “Can he come in at number six and clear the ropes? I just don’t understand. How is he even considered a bowling all-rounder?” he said, suggesting that the pick didn’t align with India’s team needs.

Speculating on the reasons behind Badoni’s selection, Srikkanth hinted that his association with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where Gautam Gambhir served as a mentor, might have played a role. “He played under Gambhir at LSG. I can’t think of any other reason why he would be picked,” he added.
