Gurugram: Former Indian cricketer and UP Cabinet Minister Chetan Chauhan passed away today on Sunday. He was 73 and had tested positive for Covid-19 in July. The former India opener was put on ventilator support at the Medanta hospital after a multi-organ failure.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the passing away of the UP Minister and former cricketer. He penned, "My colleague and former cricketer Chetan Chauhan ji has passed away. This is an irreparable loss for people of Uttar Pradesh and the world of cricket. His last rites will be performed tomorrow."

Home Minister Amit Shah also condoled the death of the former Indian cricketer.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, "I'm deeply anguished to learn of the passing away of #ChetanChauhan. I've spent so much time with him when he was Indian Cricket Team’s manager.Not only was he a tough opening batsman but was a person with tremendous sense of humour and attachment to Indian cricket."

Chauhan two-time MP from UP's Amroha had tested positive for Covid-19 in Lucknow earlier. On Saturday, Chauhan, who has served in the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) in various capacities, was airlifted from the Sanjay Gandhi PGI hospital in Lucknow to the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
The PRO of the Medanta Hospital had confirmed that Chauhan was put on life support after being airlifted from Lucknow and his condition was critical but stable.
Chauhan's health condition has deteriorated after he tested COVID-19 positive, following which the doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi hospital referred him to the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
Chauhan has played 40 Test matches for India between 1969 and 1981, scoring 2,084 runs at 31.57 with 16 half-ceturies. In the 179 first class matches he played for Delhi and Maharashtra, Chauhan amassed 11,143 runs at 40.22 with 22 centuries. The right-handed batsman is known for being one of the longest standing opening partners of the great Sunil Gavaskar.
