Mohammed Shami
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that Mohammed Shami’s international career is far from over, even after the experienced fast bowler was overlooked for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11. Despite being in strong form in domestic cricket, Shami once again failed to find a place in the national squad, surprising many observers.
Shami last represented India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and has remained out of the team since then. However, Pathan feels that a player of Shami’s stature still has every chance to return to the highest level.
Reflecting on Shami’s journey, Pathan pointed out the pacer’s vast experience and achievements. With nearly 450-500 international wickets to his name, Shami is no stranger to pressure or scrutiny. According to Pathan, being dropped or having fitness questioned is something most cricketers face at some stage, and the only solution is consistent performance.
Pathan emphasized that the Indian Premier League could be the ideal platform for Shami to make a strong statement. He noted that the fast bowler has already bowled over 200 overs recently, proving his fitness beyond doubt. While domestic cricket performances matter, Pathan stressed that the IPL carries unmatched visibility.

“If I were in his place, I would aim to dominate the IPL,” Pathan said, adding that strong performances with the new ball in the league can make it impossible for selectors to ignore a player. With the entire cricketing world closely following the IPL, standout displays there often fast-track a return to the national side. In Pathan’s view, the door to an India comeback is still open for Shami.
Since being dropped, Shami has been prolific across domestic tournaments, claiming 47 wickets in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the ongoing 50-over competition, he has picked up 15 wickets from seven matches at an impressive average of 14.93. Shami is set to represent Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, where he will look to translate his domestic form onto the biggest stage.
