Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Riyan Parag still has work to do before he can cement a place in India’s ODI squad. Despite rising demand from fans for Parag’s inclusion especially after India struggled to accelerate in the death overs against South Africa in the second ODI in Raipur. Ashwin feels the youngster has not yet showcased the adaptability required for the middle order.
With Washington Sundar failing to make an impact in the first two ODIs, scoring 13 and 1 and going wicketless across seven overs, calls have intensified for Parag to replace him. Many see the Assam cricketer as a like-for-like option who could bring more value with the bat. However, Ashwin does not fully agree with that view.

Sharing his thoughts on X, Ashwin wrote that although Parag is a “fine talent” with an impressive List-A average of 41, his lack of experience batting at No.5 or No.6 weakens his case for ODI selection. He pointed out that Parag’s success for Rajasthan Royals and Assam has mostly come at No.3 or No.4, and his earlier attempts as a finisher in the IPL did not bring the desired results.
Drawing a comparison, Ashwin referred to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been attempting to adapt to the No.4 spot in ODIs despite primarily being a top-order batter in the IPL. This, he suggested, might be the kind of versatility selectors are looking for. For Parag to return to the ODI fold, Ashwin believes he must prove he can handle lower-middle-order responsibilities while contributing with both bat and ball.
The 22-year-old, who made his ODI debut in August 2024 against Sri Lanka, has since drifted out of the setup. He has also featured in nine T20Is for India, with his last appearance coming against Bangladesh in October 2024. Since then, he has not been part of the national squad in either format.
Ashwin concluded his thoughts respectfully, saying that Parag needs to show more range in domestic cricket before earning a long-term place at No.5 or No.6.
