Suryakumar Yadav has long been celebrated as one of India’s most innovative and destructive T20 batters. Renowned for his 360-degree stroke play and fearless approach, the Mumbai batter once seemed almost unstoppable in the shortest format. However, recent numbers paint a worrying picture, raising questions about whether India’s flexible batting order is contributing to his prolonged dip in form.

India’s T20I captain has now gone 20 innings without scoring a half-century. Since November last year, Suryakumar has managed just 227 runs at an average of 13.35. The struggles have continued in the ongoing home series against South Africa, where he scored 12 in the first T20I and followed it up with a five in the second, extending his poor run.

IPL Brilliance vs International Struggles

Former India batter and ex-batting coach Sanjay Bangar has pointed out the stark contrast between Suryakumar’s IPL and international performances. For the Mumbai Indians, he enjoys a fixed batting position, which has allowed him to thrive. Last IPL season, Suryakumar amassed 717 runs in 16 matches at an astonishing average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.92, including five fifties.

Does Flexibility Work Against Him?

Bangar believes India’s strategy of maintaining a flexible batting order from No. 3 to No. 7 may be impacting Suryakumar’s rhythm. According to him, the batter flourishes when given clarity and time at the crease. “The earlier he comes in at No. 3, the better it is for him,” Bangar said, adding that constant role changes force him to bat under pressure.

Looking Ahead

With series against New Zealand lined up and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon, India faces a crucial decision. Restoring stability to Suryakumar Yadav’s role could be key to unlocking the brilliance that once made him indispensable in T20 cricket.
