Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin has backed the BCCI for how it handled the controversy involving Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his participation in IPL 2026. The issue erupted after several political leaders objected to Rahman’s presence in the league, pointing to repeated reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

With criticism mounting, the BCCI moved quickly and directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release the left-arm fast bowler from their squad. KKR had picked Rahman for Rs 9 crore during the IPL mini-auction held in December. The board’s decision drew support from a large section of the public, especially amid ongoing concerns over alleged targeted attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country.

Commenting on the matter, Azharuddin said the cricket board could not be faulted for its call. He acknowledged that while sport ideally remains separate from political developments, the situation in Bangladesh was worrying. Azharuddin also noted that such a decision would not have been taken lightly and was likely made after consultations with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Mustafizur Rahman later reacted briefly to his release, remarking that there was little he could do once a player is dropped.

The episode has had wider repercussions as well. Following the controversy, Bangladesh’s interim government has reportedly asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board to approach the ICC about shifting the venue of Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 away from India.
