Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has lauded the Indian women’s cricket team for their historic triumph at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, calling it a defining moment for women’s sport across the globe. He believes the landmark victory will inspire a new generation of young girls in India to take up cricket and pursue it professionally.

India’s long-awaited dream of winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup finally came true after agonizing near-misses in the 2005 and 2017 finals. The team clinched the title with a dominant 52-run win over South Africa, driven by exceptional performances from Shafali Verma — who scored 87 runs and claimed 2 wickets for 36  and Deepti Sharma, who contributed 58 runs and a brilliant 5/39 with the ball. Their heroics not only secured the trophy but also carved a new milestone in Indian cricket history, captivating fans worldwide.

“Women’s sport is flourishing everywhere, and India’s World Cup win is a tremendous achievement,” Waugh remarked. 

“After losing a couple of early matches, the way they fought back and delivered in the knockout stages was outstanding. They now have huge support and serve as incredible role models for young girls across India. There’s a clear path now to becoming a professional cricketer and representing your country. I believe women’s cricket in India is on the verge of an extraordinary rise," he added.
