Five-time champions India produced a memorable run chase to storm into the final of the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, successfully hunting down a record target of 311 against Afghanistan in the second semi-final. Opener Aaron George led the charge with a magnificent century, guiding India to one of the finest chases in the tournament’s history.
India got early momentum through George and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who added 90 runs for the opening wicket. Sooryavanshi once again underlined his growing reputation with a fearless 68 off just 33 balls, keeping India well ahead of the required rate during the powerplay.
Afghanistan were made to pay for early fielding lapses, dropping both openers in quick succession. Those missed chances proved costly as India raced to 91 for one in the first powerplay.
George Anchors, Mhatre Supports
Sooryavanshi’s dismissal was the only early setback, but George held firm and found strong support from captain Ayush Mhatre. The pair added a crucial 104-run partnership for the second wicket. Mhatre contributed a composed 62 before departing in the 27th over.
George continued to pace the chase expertly, reaching his hundred off 95 balls. He eventually fell for 115 with victory firmly in sight, having ensured complete control of the pursuit.
Afghanistan’s Big Total Goes in Vain
Earlier, Afghanistan posted a commanding 310 for four, led by Faisal Shinozada’s 110 and an unbeaten 101 from Uzairullah Niazai. Despite the imposing total, India’s batting depth and composure proved decisive.
India’s emphatic chase sealed a place in the final against England Under-19s, keeping their dream of a sixth U19 World Cup title very much alive.
