Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong confidence that Pakistan may yet reverse its decision to skip the high-profile group match against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for February 15 in Colombo. According to the former great, the current stance taken by Islamabad may not last long.
Speaking on the issue, Gavaskar suggested that mounting global criticism-especially from the international cricketing community and former Pakistani players could force a rethink within days. Drawing from past trends, he remarked that Pakistani cricketers have often reconsidered major decisions, pointing to frequent comebacks from retirement as examples. He believes a similar change of heart could occur before the tournament begins.
Gavaskar also stressed that the International Cricket Council cannot remain passive if Pakistan pulls out at the last moment. He explained that while an early withdrawal is one thing, backing out on the eve of a major event disrupts the tournament and affects multiple stakeholders. In such a scenario, he feels the ICC must step in.

Although Gavaskar did not speculate on the exact nature of any disciplinary measure, he underlined that the decision would involve several member boards and not rest with a single authority. He added that any action taken should act as a deterrent, ensuring no team in the future considers abandoning marquee matches at the final stage.
