Players forced to wear masks in Ranji Trophy match
An unusual scene unfolded at the MCA Cricket Ground in Mumbai on January 29 during the Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Delhi, as concerns over air quality took center stage instead of cricket. Several Mumbai players were seen wearing protective masks while fielding, highlighting the severity of pollution around the venue.
Sarfaraz Khan and Himanshu Singh were the first to take the precautionary step, covering their faces to cope with the thick dust and polluted air caused by nearby construction activity. Soon after, Musheer Khan also appeared on the field wearing a mask, underlining how uncomfortable the conditions had become for the players.
The incident has reignited debate over the effects of urban pollution on outdoor sports. Many have raised questions about player safety and the need for stricter measures when matches are held in cities battling poor air quality.

Adding to the muted atmosphere, the high-profile Mumbai vs Delhi Ranji clash failed to generate its usual excitement. The absence of marquee players and the lack of competitive stakes made the contest feel subdued. Mumbai has already dominated Elite Group D, collecting 30 points from six games and sealing a quarterfinal berth, with the added benefit of hosting all their knockout matches.
Delhi, meanwhile, has endured a disappointing campaign. Without a single victory-five draws and one loss-the team entered the match with little motivation beyond pride. As a result, what is typically a marquee Ranji fixture turned into a low-key affair, overshadowed by pollution concerns rather than on-field drama.
