Former India great lauds Ishan Kishan’s fearless approach after explosive T20 knock in Raipur

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on Ishan Kishan following the batter’s explosive innings in the second T20I against New Zealand in Raipur. Impressed by Kishan’s fearless approach, Ashwin said the knock was a reflection of the mindset that has defined the left-hander’s recent rise rather than a one-off performance.

Kishan smashed a blistering 76 off just 32 balls as India chased down a massive 209-run target, securing a seven-wicket win and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. The innings marked one of India’s most emphatic run chases in T20I cricket.

Ashwin Draws Link to Domestic Form

Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, Ashwin highlighted how Kishan’s Raipur innings mirrored his dominant run in domestic cricket. He noted that Kishan batted with the same freedom and intent during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, unaffected by pressure or selection concerns.

Ashwin pointed out that Kishan could have slowed down to reach a century but chose instead to keep attacking, trusting his shots and maintaining tempo, qualities he described as the batter’s defining strengths.

Counter-Attack Under Pressure

Walking in with India under early pressure, Kishan launched an immediate counter-attack, dismantling the New Zealand bowling and seizing control of the chase. His aggression ensured the required rate never spiralled, allowing the middle order, led by Suryakumar Yadav, to play freely and finish the game with ease.

Domestic Grind Fuels Comeback

Kishan’s resurgence has been built on an exceptional domestic run. Leading Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, he scored 517 runs in 10 innings at an average of 57.44 and a strike rate exceeding 197. He followed it up with a record-breaking Vijay Hazare Trophy century against Karnataka.

Between January 2024 and January 2026, Kishan focused on domestic cricket, rediscovering rhythm and confidence away from the international spotlight.
