Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has stunned fans with a dramatic transformation. The legendary skipper, long remembered for his sturdy frame and sharp cricketing mind, appeared visibly slimmer during a recent reunion with his former teammates Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, and Muttiah Muralitharan at the Tamil Union’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
A Viral Reunion That Shocked Fans
In a photo shared by Jayasuriya on X (formerly Twitter), Ranatunga was seen wearing a bright red kurta and smiling alongside his old teammates. But what caught everyone’s attention wasn’t just the nostalgia it was his striking weight loss. Many fans initially failed to recognise him, while others expressed surprise and curiosity about his health.
From Cricket Glory to Public Life
Now 61, Ranatunga retired from international cricket in July 2000 after a celebrated career that redefined Sri Lankan cricket. Post-retirement, he entered politics and became a member of the Sinhala Urumaya party, continuing his leadership journey off the field.

A Legacy Beyond the Field
Arjuna Ranatunga’s new look may have surprised fans, but it also reflects change and resilience traits that defined his career. Whether on the field or off it, the iconic skipper continues to inspire, reminding everyone that champions evolve, but their spirit never fades.
