Gautam Gambhir
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly dismissed speculation suggesting a possible change in India’s Test coaching setup, making it clear that Gautam Gambhir’s position as head coach is not under threat.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla addressed the rumours head-on, denying claims that the board was considering bringing in a new Test coach or replacing Gambhir. Reports had earlier suggested that former India batter VVS Laxman was approached to take over the role following India’s recent struggles in the longest format.
The speculation gained momentum after India endured a disappointing run in Test cricket, including a 0-2 home series loss to South Africa. This came on the heels of a 0-3 whitewash by New Zealand last year, both defeats occurring under Gambhir’s tenure. The New Zealand series loss had already knocked India out of contention for the ICC World Test Championship 2025 final, while the South Africa setback could further jeopardise their chances of qualifying for the summit clash.

Clarifying the board’s stance, Shukla said there was no truth to the reports, reiterating that neither removing Gambhir nor appointing a new coach was under discussion. He added that the BCCI secretary had already conveyed the same message publicly.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also strongly refuted the rumours, calling them completely baseless and speculative. He stressed that the board has not taken any steps to alter the coaching or leadership structure in Test cricket and criticised even reputed outlets for circulating unverified information.
