Bhubaneswar: The fame of Odissi has reached far and wide with artistes across the world falling in love with this dance form. The ultimate dream of every Odissi dancer is to perform the dance in its home land, Odisha. Giving this opportunity to dancers from across the globe, ‘Samskritiki’ hosted the eighth ‘Odissi International-2017’, an international Odissi dance festival at Bhanja KalaMandap, Bhubaneswar.

“This festival has been designed to bring all Odissi dancers in the world together. Odissi has now spread its wings all over the world and with this festival we celebrate Odissi as a family,” said Shyamhari Chakra, organiser of the event.

Asked about the importance of this festival, Shyamhari replied, “The festival is an effort to promote cultural tourism. Dancers from various countries come here and get to know the birthplace of Odissi. They always love our postures, they like the look of Odissi as well as the Odissi music that goes with the dance, so they feel happy coming here to perform.”

Apart from the dance performances, various seminars and symposiums on Odissi were also organised during this festival. Around 300 dancers and delegates from 15 countries participated in the celebration of Odisha’s own classical dance.

After a good performance, Shreya, a young dancer said, “It’s very nice to perform here. I have performed here before as well. I am dancing because of my own interest and I receive guidance from my mother and Guru Prabhat Kumar Swain.”

Paridhi Joshi, a dancer from Bengaluru said, “I have been coming here for last two years. I feel really blessed as here we see young and budding Odissi talents as well as the stalwarts of the dance on the same stage. Odissi is now getting popular in Southern part of the country.”

This annual event was previously organised for five days but now with growing participation this year it was hosted for six days. Odissi International that started on December 18 concluded yesterday.
